Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
