The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
