Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
