An defense minister has revealed that the MoD is currently looking into the possible security risks posed by Chinese-made vehicles, while staff have been told to avoid discussing classified matters in all vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Staff
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister said that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of surveillance that are present in every single vehicle, to only have those secret talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about safety.
When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Defence Context
This revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The wider security situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, from vehicle use to communication practices.
